Meet Asha Parekh.

PhD Biomedical Engineer

CEO, Front Line Medical Technologies Inc.

London, ON

What inspired you to enter and pursue this field?

I'm a biomedical engineer by trade and co-invented a medical device with my business partner. We started this company to commercialize the device and the inspiration was the potential impact this device can make in the world.

How did you come to be in this position?

Founding Front Line was not something I had planned on. My journey from my PhD studies to where I am now has very much unfolded organically. While taking part in the Medical Innovation Fellowship (MIF), I met Dr. Adam Power, who is my now business partner at Front Line and Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the company. We worked on a few projects together and the year following my participation in MIF is when we developed the COBRA-OS. We saw the incredible value that this type of device could offer globally and we have always been passionate about making that impact a real one. So when we received some initial funding and had the opportunity to put a significant effort into the project, we did just that. I took the leap from engineering into entrepreneurship and have been dedicated full-time on Front Line ever since. Again, the inspiration was my passion for the project, which stemmed from wanting to work on something related to my field of biomedical engineering, wanting to work on a project translatable to the real world, and always wanting to truly help people.

What advice would you give young women looking to enter your current line of work?

Don't be afraid of not knowing how to do everything! You will learn. It only matters that you figure out how to get it done and do it. Another key thing is your team - the people you work with and your support network - they are incredibly important to both your personal success and ultimately the success of what you are working on. People make projects boom and can just as easily break even the most promising projects.

"Be proud of whatever you choose to focus on in life; remember, we need all kinds in the world. Show up as your authentic self, do your best and all of our contributions will collectively help our world."
